Hi Jim,

What you want is IPMI, or Intelligent Platform Management Interface

HP's branded version is iLO2

Strangely enough I don't know if IBM has a branding term for theirs
(though basically all xSeries servers support it in one way or another).

Most server grade motherboards have ipmi either built in or as an option.

Some use a second (or third/fourth) network interface, and some bridge
it onto the primary network interface.

I use IPMI on almost a daily basis...
