You've got two separate issues here and you probably need to resolve
the former before tackling the latter.  Until you're up to speed, the
path of least resistance would be to find someone who knows what
they're doing to direct the repurposing of the older machines.  Best
bet would be to find someone local (perhaps there's someone on this
list who would be interested).  Another possibility: there are a
number of groups around the country that do this type of work (are
there any currently operating in Tucson?); I would talk to them and
see if they can help you out.
