Nope, it uses its own. It can read mbox, don't know about
writing.

Groupwise (commercial product from Novell) uses an encrypted
database back end for mail storage, even the sysadmin can't
read your mail (although he can back it up and restore it,
it can only be read by you and those you delegate). If
sysadmin wants to see your mail, he must change your
password and log in as you. I don't know if Novell is going
to port (has ported?) Groupwise to run on Linux or if
they're going to stick with Netmail for their Linux mail
offering.
