[Tfug] OS`s

I personally love Debian for everything. KDE, Gnome, all work great out of
the box. I think K3B can do DVD-RW stuff too, but, not having a DVD-RW to
try it out on (and disliking the whole graphical K3B thang) I can't
promise it.

You can go the traditional (hard, IMHO, and even something I don't like
;-) Deb install route, which is uber flexible. Or, you can start with
something like the Progeny Anaconda installer if you want something that
looks like Red Hat/Fedora.

Others have suggested Mandrake, and I'll admit with a good few
alternative package sources (The PLF is your friend) you can get pretty
much everything you'd ever want (even crap that you can't find on Debian
due to the DFSG). Mandrake is great for new users, so, if you are new to
Linux you may want to give it a try. Personally, I'd never use it in a
million years, but I have friends who swear by it ;-) Also, for DVD-RW
support right out of the box, it is hard to beat. I have a friend (who, if
you ask kindly enough, I'll give you his email) who does all the
Video-to-DVD conversions of the Physics Dept. colloqieums under Mandrake.

FreeBSD is actually pretty damned easy to install and upgrade. It can be
installed with KDE and Gnome, and I think you can install K3B on it as
well. It's a bit more of a trick to configure things like X, but it can be
rockin' fast right out of the box. If you're not much of a Linux fan and
prefer the BSD world, then I'd recommend FreeBSD.

Others have suggested Gentoo, and I'll admit I kinda like it. I had it on
my laptop for a while and my laptop has never ran faster (the DVD playback
was amazing). Slow upgrades and quirky installers pretty much put me off
the distro tho (I mean, you can just install binary packages, but what's
the point? If I just want binary packages I'll use Debian thank you very
much ;-)

Of course, the end all be all in Linux distros is SUSE. So you really
should give it a go ;-)

*(Kidding! I hate SUSE, twas a joke ;-)
