Hello erich,
Windows may not be the "best" solution, but it is a fact that it's
in the world. Maybe have the students try using things like:
http://www.mingw.org/download.shtml
Fairly straight forward download for Windows, GNU GCC compiler and
utils available and a ".exe" installer for gcc/g++. I am sure with
a little searching, you can find Windows versions of other programs
you might need, like OpenOffice etc...
Just because students are running windows doesn't mean they can't
use GNU software! Broadening minds is really not that difficult.
