Are you now considering software raid again over the hardware raid 
solution because of budget constraints?

I know you said you didn't want lectures on backing up, but this is more 
of a suggestion if you use software raid solution. You may already be 
considering it.

Have you ever used LVM with raid as part of your backup strategy? It 
offers considerable speed advantages over straight tape backups.
