getting any nVidia chipset working successfully under a linux disrto that
nvidia doesnt support is a chore. i run MDK, which is supposedly
supported, and it still sucked.
anyway, I found a howto for debian here:
http://games.luv.asn.au/lsd/nvidia-mini-howto.html
but the basic idea is that you MUST have an appropritly patched kernel in
order for your nvidia hardware to work. if you do not have it, you will
get problems like you describe here. i would assume doubly so for a mobo
made by nvidia.
i dont use debian, but there seems to be some nvidia kernel source
packages here:
http://packages.debian.org/cgi-bin/search_packages.pl?searchon=names&keywords=nvidia-kernel-src
and they say they support the nforce.
also, for my GeForce2, vga=ask used to crash my system during boot (back
when I was using lilo) dont know if that was ever fixed or is still a
prohblem, but i would avoid it.
