Thanks for your replies;
I've got SuSE 8.0 Professional (which stands for 8.0 ten dollar bills at
Borders's; plus tax :) well, I'm really happy with it, despite it's problems
(which will be solved eventually, for a limited time :) but I'll always
like it more than Windows.
Anyway, I've got the xf86-4.2.0-107 Basic X11 package, and trying to get a
*-devel.rpm not to conflict has been unsuccessful ....which got me into the
trouble in the first place, working with the libpng's, as I recall... hmmm.
I think it has something to do with the libppng because it also is not
showing in the compilation; I crashed KDE and X by replacing a libpng. So,
I had to create some phony libpng.so.? links to another version just to get
X to run, then I downloaded an rpm; and X works; but the libpng is probably
a differnet version than the store bought CD version, but I'm so sick of
using YaST2 (Your annoying Setup Tool2); that I'd rather just deal with the
different versions' hang-ups, and get used to updating things. Gotta start
somewhere.
I have Debian, too. But I've got other issues with it (KDE3, for example)
ANYWAZZE, Now, I've got libpng.so.1 linked to libpng 1.0.89, and
libpng.so.2 to libpng.so.2.1.0.12; libpng.so.3.1.2.4 disappeared into the
aether; I need to get that back, somehow. I'd also like to update the
libpngs: 1.0.89 to 1.2.4-40 but don't want to screw things up.
If I download libpng.so.3.1.2.4, will it create it's own shared object file
and leave the other majors alone? And what would be the command to replace
the 1.0.89 to 1.2.4-40? I've used the kpackage manager, but I could do it
on the command line; is it --replacepkgs, or does that delete ALL the
versions, is it --replacefiles?
I would like /usr/lib to have:
1) libpng.so.3 linked to libpng.so.3.1.2.4; which neither exist, now;
2) libpng.so.2 linked to libpng.so 2.1.0.12; which it is; and
3) libpng.so.1 linked to libpng.so.1.2.4-40
Again, whatever I did with the libpng's originally crashed X and I couldn't
startx.
Tahnxs again!
cahrles
