The beauty of Linux (one of them) is that it runs on different hardware
platforms without a lot of problems with software portability.  Even with a
tiny market share, you can still run almost all of the software that you
would run on Linux x86 on Linux PPC.

Besides, with IBM behind Linux, and with them being one of the owners of the
PPC I think you can expect good corporate support from them.  Do a google
search on PowerPC 970 (or just look around IBM's web site) for their future
direction wrt Linux on the PowerPC platform.
