I would not recommend PPTP as it is poorly designed by Microsoft and has
been hacked longed ago....3-DES is about as safe as it gets right..true
IPSEC is a pain to setup by I have attached some pretty good
instructions on Freeswan and client configurations to Cisco routers,
etc. Also there is a very good client piece (about $140.00) from a
company called SafeNet. The product is called SoftRemote and can be
configured to connect to just about anything if you don't want to hassle
with IPSEC setup in Windows. Here is the link for that:

Depends on how the VPN hardware is configured.

At work we have a Cisco VPN sollution that requires users to use the
cicso vpn client to connect, I've used this with Windows 2K, Windows XP,
and OS X.1.5 and OS X.2.x , it works well.

They also have clients for Linux.

The VPN can be configured to use PPTP which is what windows comes with
by default, Yes there are ways to make Windows speak IPSEC but its not
something that I've found easy to do.

The guys at ssh.com have a windows client that speaks IPSEC thats free
to download.
