Justin,
It probably caused alot of blank stares because its an incredibly stupid
idea to publically announce the fact that you're commiting a federal crime.
I know of about half a dozen places here in Tucson that publically broadcast
unencrypted 802.11b traffic. I could describe where they are quite easilly.
Businesses, peoples homes, you name it. Of these places, two are businesses
that have a heavy amount of porno traffic after hours..presumably due to the
owners of these businesses. Another location dumps hundreds of people's
usernames and passwords every day. If I went out and publically stated where
these places were, i'd be smothered in lawsuits and likely visited by the
police.
Wardriving is fun and educational, but its also illegal. Very illegal. By
marking a sidewalk or a wall with instructions, you're essentially saying
"Look, everybody! I'm an irresponsible idiot willing to make it easier for
someone else commit a crime!"
Claiming that you're doing it for the public's benefit is pure bullshit..
Thats like saying that its okay to walk into peoples homes and steal their
jewelry because their doors were unlocked and their jewelry was right there
out in the open, and oh--you're not commiting a crime.. You're merely
teaching them a lesson about security!
Mmhmm.
