I really like Pan.  It's got a ton of features and runs under X (uses GTK).
One of my favorite features is that you can easily change the layout to mimic
several other news readers.  Personally, I make mine look like NewsXpress (an
old Windows news reader).  It's also got a very nice queuing system if you
need to grab binaries, or are connected to more than one server.  As for your
problems, you can control exactly how many connections each server can have.
