[Tfug] TODO list manager

Hello once more,

One of the key daily life management utilities I am currently missing is a
good Todo list manager. For reference, I include in this list things like
email, a calendar, y so forth.

My primary requirements are cross-platform, relative ease of use, and a
unified data set.

For example, I get my email via IMAP which allows me to access a single
unified store of email from most anyplace that has Net access. At home I use
Mutt, on one of the machines that gets mail locally I also use Mutt, and from
my phone I use K9 email and access via IMAP. Different apps, but the email
store is unified.

For a calendar that I can keep my appointments in (my needs are fairly basic),
I use Google's calendar (which I think uses the ical format or similar). I
can access the calendar via the website. From my phone there are numerous
apps (besides the default Google app) that support Google Calendar. From
home, I usually use the website, but I can also have the drop-down Gnome Shell
calendar display the same data.

But, for Todo data, I still don't have all the parts. At least, I am as yet
unaware of the needed toolchain. I know Google has some sort of Todo
management utility on the web, but I don't know how widespread support for it
is outside the Google-sphere. Again, my needs are relatively simple, I just
need a way to add tasks under varying categories. The ability to add a more
extensive description in addition to the task title would be a plus.

At home, I use the console tool "w2do" (available in the Debian archive), but
its DB format is super simple and non-networked, so synchronization of the
data must be done manually. It's also just a console app so there's no
net/website/phone access.

Has anybody else required such a tool and found a suitable program? I've read
(*very* briefly) that EMACS org-mode can perform todo list management (in
addition to a whole lot else) and I know there's an Android app that allows
some form of Net access to the org-mode data. Maybe this will do what I need?
I'll need to check further.

I don't see this as a super complex task (clearly, far simpler than email or
calendaring), so I'm considering implementing the stack if I can't find what I
need. My solution would be something like:
  * A console app with the data stored in a MySQL/SQLite database
  * A simple PHP (or maybe Ruby) website to allow universal access to the data
  * A simple native Android app, probably with a homescreen widget, to display
    the current todo tasks

If I used Ruby over PHP then I'd need to learn Ruby, something I want to do,
but it would add a time overhead to the project. Also, even though the app
would be relatively simple, I don't yet know how to write for Android (PalmOS,
no problem, but not much call for that these days...). Again, though,
learning Android programming is high on my todo list and this might be a
suitably simple program to start with.

Any ideas, TFUG?
