We've had multiple items destroyed by lightning in the couple weeks here at 
work. We go thru dedicated surge arrestors by the dozen every monsoon 
season.... Easy to believe cable modem getting fried by a nearby lightning 
strike, same with the laptop if it was directly connected to the same.
