I hadn't thought about this from a business perspective before, but I
suspect that you're right on target. In the classes that I've taught
at the UofA, I've noticed an increasing impatience among undergrads
who expect that you will respond to email within minutes, hours at the
most. In response, I and other instructors have started imposing time
windows (e.g., "I will respond to an email within 24 hours, but not on
weekends.") As these student leave school and become more and more
involved in the business world, one would expect that they'll bring
this expectation of immediately response with them. As an instructor,
of course, I can get away with imposing blackout periods. The same
can't be said for business owners.
