so what's the difference between a Linux live CD vs. Linux install CD?

If that's what you have it will work.  Depending on the version you can 
get the partition info from MS's fdisk.

I recommend that any power user have one or more Linux live CD's in 
their toolkits.

Relating to your other post I recommend you learn just a little more 
about partitions.
