This would require towers to get above the terrain and
foliage.

Cost of trenching is actually not a factor.  He owns
a back hoe, front loader and numerous other "man toys".
He'd probably welcome the excuse to go dig up the yards
(again)  :>

I think something DSL-ish will be the easiest win for him.
There's already miles of phone cable on the property so
he could leverage that "investment"
