I used to use BitchX, but then I found irssi and haven't gone back.

http://www.irssi.org/documentation includes a Startup HOWTO.

Just aptitude install it.  The panacea is irssi + screen on a server so
you can connect to your client from anywhere (including internet kiosks
that allow java ssh clients) and you never miss out on the conversation.

And of course if you're terminal-challenged, X-Chat isn't too bad.
