Why did you have to worry about what WM to use? I chose to play 
around with different WM's, but the Debian default of Gnome 
worked fine. It wasn't as customizable as FVWM, but that was my 
choice, to opt for something more configurable.

Additionally, after having setup my FVWM config, I use my box an 
average of 10 hours per day for real work. And I never *have* to 
tinker; though I still choose to sometimes.
