Well, video *capture* would also have hard deadlines  :>
Note that this doesn't only apply to mundane things like
(home) "DVR's" but, also, commercial equipment to capture
and store material for later broadcast, etc.  ("Um, hello
Mr. Satellite... could you please resend those last 6 frames
of 'MWC episode 7'?"

Agreed.  It depends on whether you have hard or soft
deadlines (and, as with most things, soft is typically
the case)
