Friend of mine who don't code have been installing and using Linux.  They
use
Debian-based distributions, and synaptic is all they need to get  things
installed
and working.  They do desktop office stuff, play games, surf the web, do
email,
draw pictures, and all the things you'd normally do on a home computer.

They have managed to do so for many years without writing, reading, or
editing a single line of code. They work through the gui (gnome for most
of them, though my youngest likes fluxbox) for everything.

However, if you're a programmer, you get a lot of editors and programming
languages for free.  If you have no intention to avoid coding, and are eager
to
do some, then Linux is a wonderland.
