Yep.  There's a BIOS-level whitelist of cards blessed by IBM.  There's
a program that flips the appropriate bit to turn it off so it's
trivial to work around (for now at least) but still a real pain in the
ass.

That being said, once I turned off the check and installed an ipw2200
in my T40, my wireless connectivity was better than ever before.  I
really like the card (with the except of the required binary blobs).

Only issue that I've had is that my little "wireless card is
transmitting" led stopped working.  Not a big deal, of course, but who
doesn't like a flashing light or two on the machine?
