So long as you're already using a generic kernel, and so long as your
new hardware is supported by it, you _should_ be fine. I've done it
several times.

However, once you get into running custom kernels... my experience says
that it almost never works. But a stock i386 kernel copied direct from
the install cd? Yeah, those've never given me problems.
