[Tfug] email question

Hello -

This being an e-mail, it may seem stoopid to ask, but how do I send e-mail?

I normally run winders, so that's probably my problem.

I'm writing an application that will be running under Linux (Fedora is what
I'm running now), that needs to send out small notification emails. I was
hoping to just create a short file with whatever appropriate headers and
stuff, and then invoke a regular application like mail or sendmail or
whatever.

I tried mail, just for testing. I gave it a known e-mail address, but the
message was kicked back. My initial problem is an administration or
configuration problem.

I googled through a bunch of stuff and ignored buying the $75
administrator's handbooks, and didn't find the right solution in The Mail
Reference Manual. There's a bunch of reference information in info mail,
info sendmail.. but I don't even know what to look for if I were reading
it.

I know our ISPs name, pop, smtp things (whatever I entered into winders
outlook) but I didn't find where / how to make those settings in Linux. I
did set up email with Email (evolution) and there's a Kmail, but I don't
think I'll have them on my final machine -- but perhaps I should -- that's
part of my problem. What MTA (?) is simple enough for me to setup. And,
can I just call it from my app and pass it a few parameters so it will send
a short message?

Our final instrument will go out to some customer and it will obviously
require setup. My last machine was simple. It was winders, and I just put
messages to the outlook out folder, and it was done. The customer was
responsible for actual setup of winders lookout (I guess I should speak
better of it, because I did get it to work).

Anyway, could anyone point me to an example or SIMPLE administration guide
for sending email with Linux.

Thanks
