ya, that was way over the top, I still get LJ but did not think much of
that Ultimate Linux box, I guess everyone has there own idea of what is
best in a PC.

As far as getting Lin or Win setups in place with updates and all needed
applications, Linux is faster for me. Most of the speed gain is from
Linux having the drivers and applications I need in one place, with
windows I normally have to fiddle around finding hardware drivers for my
video, and sound boards (including stuff on mobo). One pain I have had
on Linux is GPIB, which I have used the linux-gpib project for, but I
don't like loading and compiling hardware modules that are sourced
outside a distribution. I think Debian has linux-gpib now, and I see
packages on Ubuntu so that compliant may be fixed. Some of the computers
I set up interface with test instruments, and thats what GPIB is for.
One other area I've been looking into is machining, and Linux has a
project for that also LinuxCNC.org. LinuxCNC used some Ubuntu tools to
make an installer with real time extensions and still get Ubuntu
updates, which sounds amazing.

Usability for games and home/office type stuff probably biases me
towards Windows. However I prefer some of my tools to be more
transparent, and not because it makes things easy, rather I can audit
the stuff, I can find out to what ever level I want if a machine is
telling me something I can trust. What do the GPIB functions do to feed
data into the register's of that card I have in my PC, well I'm not a
very good C programmer, but I can follow the data path through, its for
the most part written in a way to not obfuscate.

I now use many open source tools on Windows. Open Office (rm MS Office),
Python (rm VB) and many others, which has caused my cash flow to MS to
drop to almost nothing, both personal and at work. If many others are
having the same luck I am with these open source products then MS has
problems in its future.
