Out of curiosity. Did anybody try to turn off Gnome and run just
OpenBox on Ubuntu.
According to their documentation it is enough to edit
~/.xinitrc file. Just remove exec gnome-session and write exec
openbox. That should do it.
That should give you couple warps of speed (I am not a star track
person so I probably mess this one). I think that Ubunu even has some
project like that where OpenBox is default.
Did anybody try Xubuntu. That should feel also light. On FreeBSD you
really can see the difference between Xfce and Gnome.

On another hand I want to say that I tried today first time Galeon web
browser when somebody asked the question about it. I am using it whole
day and I am loving it more and more. It feels lighter then Opera.
Unfortunately it looks like the project is dead and that
they are developing only ephiphany which was default browser on my
initial Gnome installation on the top of the FreeBSD. I remember
switching to Firefox without hesitation.
