well, you asked me why i believe it doesn't work.  not booting is a
pretty good basis for such a belief, don't you think?  :-)  you didn't
ask for a bug report.

more precisely, here are my choices as i see them:

1.  go on a wild goose chase to find out why a stock kernel doesn't
work, only to find out that i will need to roll my own anyway.

2.  keep rolling my own, which up until now worked fine.

that sounds very appealing, once i find out how to compile them (maybe
make-kpkg can do it).  that answers one of my earlier questions.  if i
ever do decide to use a stock kernel that is what i will do.

but i still prefer a kernel that boots (custom) to one that does not
(stock).  it's just a thing with me.  :-)
