I always use my own, I use IPcop (http://ipcop.org) with a few tweaks.

Absolutely.  NO questions asked.  I would not expose a non-firewall machine of 
any type directly to the Internet without a firewall in place.  Dedicated box 
when there's a LAN inside the connection.

For Windows laptops I use either ZoneAlarm or Outpost, what is there similar for 
Linux?
