[Tfug] flaky gkrellm

for the past week, the following:

o parts of gkrellm do not refresh (repaint) the display -- gray/white areas
o rclick takes 15 min to bring up config dialog, and it is not painted
o gkrellm sometimes shows up in htop as using 100% cpu
o eth0 and eth1 but not lo monitors sometimes disappear
o it is intermittent at low cpu/downloads and usual otherwise

o possibly unrelated: vlc sometimes stops video but keeps playing
audio.  also perhaps
worse with high cpu or lots of downloads.

the best i could find from google is that the kernel takes a long
time to get internet stats from /proc with smp  (i use smp and for me
it takes 0.3s sys time.
is that a red flag?),
so i should change inet checking interval.  i did this using the config
files. to 10s from 1s,  and it had no effect.  there was only one
obvious setting.

before i spend too long trying to debug this in unlikely directions
(e.g. starting from scratch
and adding things one by one), has anybody seen it?

i am running debian sarge on smp 2.6.11 with gkrellm and
gkrellm-common from sid.  i am running
a slightly old xserver-xfree86.
