[Tfug] Lindows

I have Lindows 4.0, but I wasn't as impressed as the article author was
about it.

Overall I think it is a step in the right direction (a Linux anyone
could install with no guidance whatsoever) but the security profile by
default is abysmal. It can be improved (by setting up users, etc. normal
hardening applies) but the default (imo) should have been to create a
privileged user and use that instead of root.

Click-N-Run rubs me the wrong way (not because you have to pay for it,
but because I don't know if any of the makers of the software are
getting anything out of it). I think it is an excellent concept pulled
off astonishingly well, I just wish I knew if they were cutting the
software authors a check from the Click-N-Run proceeds. Somehow, I doubt
it, but I am very cynical in that respect anyway.

The renaming of items kind of took me a moment to grasp, but from a new
user's perspective they would not notice it had been done.

My mother successfully runs Debian unstable on her laptop, and she can
install it without any need for help from me (of course after me showing
her about 20 times how to do it). This would have been great to have
when I was first showing her how to install and use Linux.

Overall I think it is a good product. Only being able to acquire it by
paying $99 is a bit steep. And like I said, default security profile is
not something I would like unleashed en-masse.

My $0.02

Glenn

Does anybody out there have or used this distribution? See the
review on it in Linux Journal. I wonder if you can improve on its
security.
