No need? It's only a case of actually getting life out of the machines.
The more 'cobbled' the computer, the more likely it is that it desperately
needs a custom operating system. Pre-packaged bloatware kills, and Windows
and Office definately fall into this category.

Running *nix, a PII is still perfectly usable. Running windows... well,
slow is an understatement.

My desktop machine (1.4ghz Athlon) boots in about 17 seconds under Linux
(and that's loading way more system services than I honestly need now that
I'm not using it as a server any more). It takes over a minute to boot
into Win2k. Only services it's running under windows are Sophos and
Mozilla quickstart.

I'd hate to see what XP does to it...
