[Tfug] Waste-Not Warehouse - was(Computer Recycling)

About a year ago I tried to volunteer at Waste-Not. I had a grand
vision: I would refurbish old computers and put Linux on them and then
teach people to use it. I was told I had to fill out an application. I
filled out the application. I was told I needed an interview. I
scheduled an interview. At the interview there was no one who knew why
I was there. I called to schedule a second interview and was told that
they didn't really need any help. I thought that was odd, because every
one of the three times I had been there, there was a pallet full of
computer parts that was never touched or moved. Also, no one there
seemed to know who was doing the computer work. Since then, I've talked
to people about Waste-Not, and no one (the Star reporter who did the
story I read which caused me to attempt to volunteer in the first place
and a friend who works at Food Bank) has been able to demistify the
enigma of Waste-Not's management.
I have called Gary at World Care and I am going to go by there someday
(it's on the other side of town from me) but I've had my illusions
dimmed - he told me that Microsoft donates licenses for all the
computers he manages to cobble together, so there's no need for Linux on
stripped machines. :(
