Unless I've missed something in the past few months, OpenOffice does
not include a filter for importing WordPerfect documents. Rather, you
need to get the wpd2sxw script (http://libwpd.sourceforge.net/) which
will convert WordPerfect documents to OOo format. I don't believe
that you can export from OOo to WordPerfect.

I've heard better things about AbiWord but haven't used it myself and
can't comment.

The original poster said that he's used the Wine-based version of WP.
I've heard nothing good about that app. However, you might want to
try to find a copy of the native Linux port of WP 8 (the Wine version
was version 9). It requires some obsolete libraries, however, so be
prepared for a bit of struggle to get it to work. If you can get all
of the dependencies resolved, it's a very nice port. Also, I seem to
recall hearing that some people have had success in running WP 5/6 for
DOS under DOS emulators (e.g. DosEMU).

But take a look at http://tldp.org/FAQ/WordPerfect-Linux-FAQ/. As
Rick points out, this is why you don't want to tie yourself to
proprietary applications.
