Have you tried other bootable CDs? WinXP, Knoppix to make sure its not
some incombustibility with the drive?

It doesn't appear to be. It is built in - i.e., not
plugged into any usb ports.
Here is what it says in the winDOH!s XP device manager
for the CD:

Toshiba ODD-DVD SD-R6252
Driver: c:\windows\system32\drivers\afs2k.sys
Device type: DVD/CD-ROM drives
Manufacturer: (Standard CD-ROM drives)
Location: Location 0 (0)

I don't know what else to check.

Everything I see (Googling around) indicates that this
is a problem with HP Pavilion ZV50xx's but noboby has
a clue why.
There is nothing in the BIOS about power management -
otherwise, I sure would disable it.
