Debian uses xsession for that stuff if you use xdm. Check the manpage for
xsession:
http://www.fifi.org/cgi-bin/man2html/usr/share/man/man5/Xsession.5.gz
There are some debian specific points in there.
I *think* that if you are using xdm on a default debian install, you can
just have each user put there favorite installed window manager in their
~/.xsession file
The .xsession file is a script, so it should be executable. examples:
/usr/share/doc/xfree86-common/examples/xsession.gz
Also, if you want users to have a gui/menu way to change their wm, you
could use gdm (gnome) or kdm (kde) both of which allow you to choose from a
drop down menu which wm to start (doesn't have to be gnome or kde) and you
can make one of them you default. gdm and kdm take a bit loner to start up,
so I use xdm on my laptop (older/slower) and gdm on my faster desktop.
Debian notes: if you want to switch the default display manager in debian,
you need to run "dpkg-reconfigure xdm" (or substitute kdm or gdm) and you
will be given a menu to select the default.
