What happens when you try and ssh home?

Does your home machine have an internet-routable ip address?  Many
apartment complexes put of their tenants behind a common
firewall/router.  This is transparent to most people.  What's the ip
address of eth0 on your home machine?

VMware should not be a problem.  Otherwise, if sshd is running and
you've no firewall (which is probably a BAD idea, BTW), it's probably
a routing issue.
