[Tfug] root on lvm on raid shutdown problem

I'd be curious what your solution on this is too. I tried doing manual LVM
in Debian with root in LVM and never got it to work. Finally I resorted to
LVM without root which did work. In SuSE I use LVM all the time (probably
even when it doesn't make sense - I always have great intentions of spending
more time with it to understand it) and SuSE will put EVERYTHING in LVM and
run flawlessly! I don't get it. There really should be some better LVM
docs out there with a decent troubleshooting section.

Subject: [Tfug] root on lvm on raid shutdown problem

I know this isn't the most common configuration, but that's how I setup my
fileserver. By following the HOWTO it wasn't TOO difficult, save for
creating a proper initial ramdisk.

My problem is that when I shutdown/reboot the machine the RAID array is
always uncleanly stopped and has to be rebuilt on boot. This occurs because
the logical volume group is not stopping properly. It doesn't completely
stop because one of the volumes is still in use, presumably the root volume.
Because LVM doesn't stop properly, the RAID device can't stop properly,
leading to the problem.

I suppose that it makes sense that the VG can't be stopped when root is
still mounted, even if only read-only. How do I overcome this? The HOWTO
doesn't have anything about this and I haven't been able to find any help so
far on the web.

The best idea I can think of would be to use the same boot time initial
ramdisk to halt the machine. That would involve using "pivot_root" to make
root the initrd, then unmounting the real root, stopping the LVM, stopping
the RAID, then rebooting. I think... If this is indeed the way to go, I'm
still surprised that I can't find any info on this with Google.
