[Tfug] update: slow home LAN

I have fixed my slow home LAN problem. However, like my problems with
Eudora/Exim/SSL, this solution is more like sidestepping the issue, but...

I removed the 3com 3C905C NIC and replaced it with a super cheap RTL8139
board. This happens to be the same chip that's built onto the mobo so no need
for an extra driver. Once I did that and figured out which one the kernel was
going to call eth0 and eth1, I was set. The network is now operating at full
speed. Huzzah!

Before trying this I compiled kernel 2.4.26 (it's currently 2.6.6) thinking
that perhaps that would solve the problem. Unfortunately, it wouldn't even
boot. After the "Loading...." line it just crashes hard. It doesn't even
show the first line of boot messages "Linux 2.4.....". After about 3 seconds
the keyboard LEDs begin to blink indicating a kernel panic, though without any
text on the screen I can't say why. This is the first time I've ever had a
kernel that didn't do anything. Very strange.
