VMWare only recognizes USB devices that are added after the start of the
VM.   Some devices once recognized this way will be seen after restart
of the VM while others need to be re-init'd each time.  The later
devices can be a real pain as they may need to be uninstalled so that
they can be re loaded by the vm's OS.  

Also make sure nothing in the host OS is claiming the USB device.
