I wouldn't assume that a working mouse means working usb.  VMware
might be getting its mouse signals from X rather than directly from
the device.  I don't KNOW this, mind you, I just wouldn't rule that
possibility out yet.  Maybe you should plug in some other usb device
like a thumb drive or something.
