[Tfug] Playing mp3's *on* the server

I found the perfect solution! There is a project out here called MPD
(Music Player Daemon - http://www.musicpd.org) that allows you to create &
play playlists through the server's sound device. There are several other
projects that allow you to connect to this daemon and control it either
locally or remotely across your network. The daemon can be configured to
accept requests through a specified port (2100 by default) and by specific
hosts (ANY host by default).

For my solution, I decided to use MPD Commander as my client application.
It's ported to both Windows and Linux and has a VERY XMMS/WinAmp
look/feel. I have my MP3's stored on my file server in the garage and
shared via NFS to this old laptop in my entertainment center (via WLAN -
802.11G (though G speeds really aren't necessary for audio at all)). The
laptop is running SuSE 9.1 (mostly because I didn't have a network card to
do an FTP install of Debian which I'd prefer and may switch to
eventually). The laptop is an old Toshiba Satellite AMD-K6 450Mhz, 128MB
RAM, 2GB HDD. It's more than adequate to deliver decent stereo audio to
my stereo through a headphone jack -> RCA jack cable.

Unfortunately this laptop doesn't have IR and I'm not sure how you'd
control MPD with IR anyhow, so for now, one of my other computers serves
as a sort of "remote control".

So there you have it! I'll keep playing with this setup to see what else
I can expect from it and more on how it works. There is another project
that tries to integrate MPD into NetJuke via a patch to NetJuke and a
custom PHP::MPD class. I didn't have much luck with it, but you can find
info about it here: http://mpd.24oz.com.

If anyone out there has experience with this setup and has any hint/tips,
I'd love to hear about them!
