I received this letter from Edward Terry at openboxbuilder.com asking for help starting a customized Fedora DVD. I thought I'd pass it on to the members of TFUG. If anyone is interested, you can email eterry at openboxbuilder.com. I have no idea how much Mr. Terry will pay as he didn't mention this in the letter...
I'm starting a business selling Linux-based computers over the Internet
and
I'm looking for someone to customize a Fedora DVD for me. The
companies I've
contacted have not been interested; one of them suggested I contact a
local
Linux User Group.
If there is someone in your group who might be interested in
undertaking this
project, could you forward this email to them or post this message? I
appreciate your help.

Project Parameters:
I'm starting a business selling computers over the Internet and I need
a
customized Fedora installation DVD. I want the installation DVD to
install
the standard Fedora Core 2 (not a custom distribution) with two
additional
packages and some different default settings (described below). It has
been
suggested that one way to do this would be as a patch that runs
automatically
after the Fedora Core installation finishes. Other methods would also
be
acceptable.
Feel free to make suggestions if you think I've made a mistake or
overlooked
something. I'm willing to consider alternate approaches; I'm not a
programmer
by any means. Email me with any questions, comments, or suggestions. If
you're interested, please send me an estimate. After you have enough
information, I will need a binding quote before work begins. The quote
should include bugs fixes. The product will be quality reviewed by a
third
party. Quality is very important.
I will be targeting consumers; I do not expect to have many business
customers. Thus, this is intended for desktop computers, not
workstations or
servers.
All of my systems will have the Athlon 64, so I'll principally be using
the
64-bit version of Fedora. I plan to provide the 32-bit version at cost
to
customers who want to install it on their current systems, so I'd like
to get
these changes for both the 64-bit and 32-bit versions. The developer
must
have access to an Athlon 64 system. All systems will have DVD drives,
so I
won't need a CD version.
This DVD will be bundled with my systems in case users need to
reinstall the
OS. I also need a separate DVD for the person assembling the systems
to
use. The system builder's DVD should result in exactly the same
installation, but it should not ask questions during the installation
process
(so that the system builder does not need to be present); it should
automatically select the correct options. (It could use Kickstart or
something else.) Since I will be selling highly customized systems, it
will
still need to probe for hardware during installation; it cannot assume
all
systems will have the same hardware configuration. A system builder's
DVD
will only be needed for the 64-bit version, not the 32-bit version.
Thorough documentation should be included so that another person could
easily
make modifications.
I can email you a list of the Fedora Core packages that should be
installed by
default. I need two Fedora Extras installed by default: Clam
Antivirus
(www.clamav.net) and Firestarter (firestarter.sourceforge.net).
Clam Antivirus should be fully configured by default. Users should not
have
to enter anything during installation if they select the defaults.
Clam
should be configured to automatically update (with both virus
definitions and
program updates) in the background. It should automatically scan
downloads
and incoming and outgoing emails.
The label of the DVD should be: Fedora Linux 2.0
Fedora should install with the following settings, assuming the user
selects
the defaults. This could be done using a profile manager or another
approach.
login user automatically on first bootup
time for OS selection at boot: 4 seconds
Only One Screen Saver: Galaxy
single click to activate items
new folders open in same window
show toolbar and location bar in Nautilus
desktop background: Solid Color, No Wallpaper
user's Home renamed to Hard Drive, opens in Documents
mounted drives to automatically appear on the desktop
The only icons on the desktop should be: Computer, Start Here, Trash,
Hard
Drive (pointing to Documents), any other mounted drives, OpenOffice,
and
GnuCash.
The only icons on the taskbar should be: Main Menu, Mozilla, Mozilla
Mail,
Red Hat Network, and Clock.
