Here's my 2 cents

We once started a LUG for my undergrad. university in Bombay, India. It
lasted for about 3 months because I didn't have the time for it, being an
EE major. I doubt you'll find the time to nurture a new organization. Plus
its really hard to pull people from the other side of the fence into the
better, greener, less buggier world of linux. They'll always find a
counter-argument like... hey Counter-strike doesnt' work on Linux and
Internet Explorer is a GREAT browser. And here's the clincher... I love
Word... why use Latex when you can use word... there's no point. Plus,
since most people who use Windows use a pirated version of it and all the
s/w that comes with it, it is really hard to make the argument that all
s/w in Linux is free. The only people who in my experience have embraced
Linux have been people who're curious by nature and take apart stuff.
Unfortunately, these days most engineers dont' fit that description.

There are so many websites these days that you can get info about Linux
for, that the whole concept of a LUG and meetings is becoming redundant to
discuss technical stuff and problem solving. Its good to meet and make new
friends though. Being a recent convert myself, I've found this mailing
list to be a very good resource. As for install-fests, installing Linux is
probably easier these days than Windows. So, basically, all I'm trying to
say is, save your time and look for a girlfriend like all the other EE
undergrads... that itself is a full-time major.
