If you installed potato you didn't install the latest version.
woody, which is about as stable as there is, installs Samba 2.2.3.
Woody is called testing but will "officially" be called stable any day
now but that's only because the other architectures aren't all ready
yet. Many of us have been using it for almost a year.
If you installed potato it is easy to upgrade to woody.
