[Tfug] A question about a modem

Hello, 

I am using Red Hat 7.3. A clean install (default
laptop settings) on an Acer Extensa 710DX laptop, that
shipped with Windows 98 4.10.1998

I have an external Motorola @world 28.8 modem. It is
connected to com1 (03f8, IRQ 4). When I run setserial
-g /dev/ttyS0 I get: /dev/ttyS0, UART 16550A, Port:
0x03f8, IRQ: 4

There is an internal LT WinModem (no linux driver for
chipset). It is not in use. The hardware browser lists
it under 'unknown device LT Winmodem.' 

The resources for the serial ports according to
setserial match up to the resources in the BIOS (if I
understand setseral -g correctly). 

I am using KPPP for the dialer/modem setup. I first
set it to look for the modem on /dev/ttys0. I then
clicked 'Query Modem' and got 'Seaching for Modem'
then 'Modem Ready' and then it ran through the list of
queries it was doing 'ATI, ATI 1, ATI 2' etc. The
Modem Query Results came up, and all queries (ATI-ATI
7) were blank. 

When I try to connect, I get 'Modem Ready' then
'Initialising Modem.' It just hangs at initialising
modem indefinitely. I can cancel out of it, the
computer doesn't lock or give any error messages. 

I then tried: 
ln -s /dev/ttyS0 /dev/modem 
and selected /dev/modem as the place to find the
modem, and had the same problem. 

The modem works fine under Windows 98 and DOS/win3.1
(it was taken from a win3.1 machine using trumpet
winsock), but it has never been used under linux. 

I am not really sure what to do next.
