Try it and see.  Here is the hype:
http://www.gentoo.org/index-about.html  I haven't found any of it to be
BS.  It works better than advertised.  My gentoo system is more
flexible, faster, safer, and smaller than any distro I've used.  Its the
only linux I've installed (using an installer) that did not install
"dependencies" that weren't, "defaults" that shouldn't have been, and
holes I didn't open.

A few considerations:
1. Its not really for novice users.  I'm not sure I'd recommend it to
intermediate users.
2. You need bandwidth.  Your entire system is downloaded as needed.
3. The install took about 3 hours to build on a PII 366 w/256M ram and
1Meg up/down dsl.
4. It is non-compliant with init V, HFS and other standards.
