Hence the comment:

I can slide a 1U server on/under one of my existing 2U servers
(which already make a hellacious amount of noise!). Or, as
I initially indicated:

A Sun Netra is the ideal form factor (a bit larger than a 1U
switch but not anywhere as large as a 1U server!) but it has 128G
(i.e., 24b) limits on the drive controllers.

[Netra's are reasonably quiet, low performance machines -- well, at
least *some* models...]

My original goal in:

So, I'm looking for an idea for *small* boxes that I can repurpose
      as NAS devices.

was so that I could continue to keep the boxes in their current
locations -- e.g., atop a dresser in one of the bedrooms where
they are easy to get at (to power up/down and monitor the
blinkenleits), yet quiet enough that you can still *sleep* in
the room without the white noise from countless fans!

The Shuttle, if it proves to be as loud as I've been warned, won't
cut it in that environment. Nor will it be suitable for stuffing
*under*something in a corner of the office (i.e., it's small and
wants to sit *atop* something).
