Nick,

Thanks for the information. When I rooted the device the first thing I
did, besides making frequent backups with Titanium Backup, was to use TB to
"freeze" most all of the Motorola and Verizon junk. It didn't do too much
for performance or free memory but it certainly did clean up things.

One of the more helpful threads I originally found detailed what was safe
to remove/freeze on a Droid 3. It seems Motorola has its tentacles all
over and there were more than a few files/apks that looked safe to remove
but which the thread warned against.

I did find, I think, one major performance sink today. Since rooting I
have been using LBE Privacy Guard. Though coming from China and lacking
most all documentation, it always seemed to work amazingly well. It allows
for per-app permission control. I use it to disallow nearly all apps
access to the phone ID, my personal data, and 3g/wifi Net access unless the
app *actually* needs one or more of those to do its job. LBE has always
done precisely what it advertised and has always worked, which is great
since so many apps like to grab all the permissions they can.

Unlike a lot of Android users, I know what most of the permissions really
allow and why an app might need to request one. So many users have no clue
and they seem to fly into a panic and/or rage and think every app is doing
data mining. Obviously, though, it's not *ALL* apps... just most. :)

Anyway, though, as time has gone on it has apparently been steadily
crippling the phone's speed even though it never appears in a process
manager. I already know it doesn't work with Android 4.x so I was going to
have to get rid of it sooner or later. Since I have it backed up (and,
more importantly, have its config backed up) I decided to uninstall it.
What an enormous change!

I really don't know if it was the actual culprit, though, and this could be
temporary. I'm going to give one of the nightlies a spin anyway since I'd
like to take advantage of the many Android updates/changes since 2.3.4.
