What exactly are you looking to learn from it? Are you just looking for the 
remote access VPN / phone access independent of the network under study in 
addition to the penetration tester distro function?

Or, is the pen tester stuff where you are looking to start?

Form factor is irrelevant. I'm more interested in trying it and seeing what
I can do with it. I could use anything from a laptop to an old tower. I'm
particularly interested in rolling my own so that I can learn from it.
