I do not have info avail,  but I believe there are devices which convert 
infrared (as in remotes) and possibly wifi to serial for controlling 
audio and other devices.  I ran across mentions of it in home automation 
systems such as misterhouse et al.  They were usually mentioned with 
receivers.

I would check in the Linux home automation forums.  If I find more I 
will post.
